Sesamoiditis vs. Sesamoid Fracture

Is it possible to differentiate sesamoiditis from a sesamoid fracture or AVN?

DR.’S RESPONSE:  Sesamoiditis is an inflammation of the sesamoids, two small round bones in the ball of your foot.  These bones act to help smooth the pull of your tendons from your foot to the tip of your big toe.  They act like a block pulley with ropes through it to ease the load of work.  A sesamoid fracture is different in that those bones are actually fractured.  AVN is avascular necrosis, or diminished blood supply to those two bones.  The best way to differentiate between the three diagnoses is with clinical presentation, x-rays, or an MRI.
